EBM Element:

Operational Tools

Most forest management involves disturbance. Some planned activities are meant to create disturbance of different types and severities. Others mitigate or avoid disturbance. These activities function in isolation today. The EBM ideal gathers and coordinates disturbance tools into a single “disturbance plan”.

Operational Tools

Disturbance tools tend to be highly correlated with management jurisdiction. Harvest is used in Forest Management Areas, prescribed and managed fire in Protected Areas, and unmanaged fire or suppression are disturbances/tools in non-commercial forests. The challenge is to integrate these tools more fluidly among jurisdictions so that outcomes more closely reflect natural patterns.
